Loneliness is a complex feeling of isolation or disconnection from others. It's not as simple as being physically alone. It is more about feeling emotionally disconnected or lacking meaningful social connections. Loneliness can occur even when surrounded by people if one doesn’t feel understood, accepted, or supported by those around them. People can experience loneliness for many reasons, including social isolation, lack of close relationships, having different or new environments, losing a loved one, and feeling misunderstood or disconnected from others. It can have significant effects on mental and physical health, leading to feelings of sadness, anxiety, and depression. Addressing loneliness often involves building meaningful connections with others, seeking support from friends, family, or mental health professionals, and engaging in activities that possess a sense of belonging and connection. While loneliness can manifest differently in each individual, there are some common characteristics and signs that may indicate someone is experiencing loneliness like social withdrawal, lack of close relationships, feelings of emptiness, difficulty communicating, low self-esteem, physical symptoms, seeking attention, difficulty trusting others and increased risk of mental health issues. It's also important to note that experiencing some of these signs does not mean someone is lonely as these behaviors can have many different causes. Loneliness is not equal to solitude, it is not solely about physical isolation but rather a feeling of emotional disconnection or lack of meaningful social relationships. Loneliness is like wandering in a dense fog, where seeing is limited, and the path forward feels uncertain or undetermined. Loneliness can cloud one's perception of connection and belonging, leading to feelings of isolation. In Bus Stop many examples illustrate loneliness through the character of Cherie, she expresses her desire to find a meaningful connection despite being surrounded by people. Cherie's longing for companionship highlights the emotional aspect of loneliness. Despite being in a bus stop diner filled with people, she feels isolated and disconnected, needing a deeper connection with others. I chose this term because this is how I feel many times out of just the week. I have a deep understanding of loneliness and a personal outlook on this emotional state. Loneliness has impacted me in many ways and it is a very difficult feeling to have to deal with almost daily for most of my life.
