The novel Motorcyle on the Sea of Tranquility helps us reflect on the importance of living in the present and being able to find inner peace that sometimes we lose due to situations that we do not know how to handle. It is a moving and emotional story that makes us rise and fall emotions in each different chapter. I think this story was written to be able to identify with some characters,. I like that the story tells different stories within it, talking about the characters, how they live in a very rigid family and the experiences that each one developed during the story. The post-traumatic stress that Chuy suffers after returning from Vietnam I think many North Americans suffer from it (I have not had to live with someone who has affected him in such a way) but I imagine that many like him must have returned home that way, and as I said before, I think it is a book to identify yourself in different circumstances or experiences. I highly recommend this book to anyone who shows us the strength between brothers, friends and loyalty, leaving us that as a message.
The song “Wind in My Hair” by Mandy Moore (from the Disney movie Tangled) fits the flashback to the time Chuy built a go-cart described in chapter 3. Yoli thinks back to that moment because no one understands Chuy’s reasoning for leaving on a motorcycle, but she does because Chuy himself had explained it to her years ago. As he helped Yoli get settled on the go-cart, Chuy explained that she would enjoy it because she would be in control of everything and feel the freedom it gave her, that she shouldn’t be afraid or hold back. The song by Mandy Moore talks about the feelings of a person who has spent their life being held back by fear, but that is now being encouraged to picture a life without obstacles where everything and anything is possible. The lyrics themselves mirror what Yoli is feeling as she’s driving the go-cart: “wind in my face that made me feel fly and feel free” (25). There’s a moment in the song that the lyrics suggest that life’s journey has many challenges, but that they can be overcome. To me, this relates to the part once Yoli has crashed because, although she is hurt, she felt like she was on top of the world, like she could do anything after that.
