My name is Jay Lewenstein. Currently I teach community college English classes on multiple campuses, and everywhere I go, I try to create writing clubs out of my classrooms. I encourage my students to write for publication in my online websites. We call ourselves Friends of the Earth: IVC Friends of the Earth; COD Friends of the Earth; AWC Friends of the Earth. This semester we created Jay's Semester of Love Research Dictionary. In many of my classes we read sixties literature and develop sixties research papers. Students choose to write about Civil Rights, the Vietnam War, the Women's Movement. The sixties was a time of great change in our country. From researching our nation's past history, I now see greater student concern for our current politics.
Our goal for Jay's Semester of Love Research Dictionary is to use definition strategies to provide added dimension to our topics. I ask students to choose a term, idea, or word that DEFINES their Sixties Topic. For example:
- If they are writing about CESAR CHAVEZ, could they define LEADERSHIP? What were the qualities that Cesar had that made people follow?
- If they are writing about the JFK ASSASSINATION, could they define CONSPIRACY? There is no way one man was able to kill Kennedy with a $17.00 rifle. Someone had to make a complicated, secret plan. There must have been many people involved. How did they get away with murder?
- I modeled my writing for Marilyn Monroe. SEX SYMBOL is the the first term most people use to define Marilyn. In my research, I discovered a much more complicated side of her. I try to define her qualities that inspire to talk about her 60 years after her death. After much thought and consternation, I choose to define Marilyn's GENIUS.
I find my students enjoy reading about Marilyn as much as I do. Recently, I stumbled onto a book of Marilyn's struggles with anxiety and depression. In class, we read about the tragedy of her childhood, the pressures of being a Hollywood icon, and sadly, the destructive effects of her drug addiction. We also examine the mystery behind her death. I find her story captivates the interest/imagination of my students like no other. In many of my classes, we read the classic stageplay Bus Stop. This is the work Marilyn famously converted into successful film. Of course, it was her GENIUS that made it work.
I'm calling this an ABOUT US page. The body of the site consists of my description of in-class activities. If you scroll down the right-side menu bar, you can see excerpts of student defintions. These were lifted directly from their research papers. Each semester, I experiment with a new format and and/or a new theme. Our students are unique individuals that come from diverse backgrounds. With these publications, I hope to provide them with a space to share their thoughts and feelings in a safe and meaningful way. If you have read all the way to this point, I encourage you to register for our classroom Facebook Pages to stay abreast of all current writing and activities. Become a Friend!

I try to write something every day. I'm not saying that it always happens. But, I'm convinced increased contact with my students outside of class hours reinforces learning. In this day and age students learn in isolation; their participation in Facebook helps them feel more part of a larger group. Our writing brings us closer together.
