The song I decided on was “Fifteen” by Taylor Swift. I am a long-time fan and supporter of Taylor’s work and have been lucky enough to see her live in concert twice. As a fan, I get exposed to a lot of media regarding the artist such as articles, interviews, documentaries, and more so I can confidently say she is not only an incredible musician but also an impeccable woman. Taylor Swift is an artist who is tremendously meticulous when it comes to her songwriting and the production of her songs. As she is someone who has been in the music industry since the age of 14, there is no denying her devotion to creating music. She is known for her heartfelt and empathic lyrics, her ability to transform feelings/situations into words, and someone who speaks out about the inequalities against women in the workplace. So when author William Inge introduced the character Elma Duckworth in his play Bus Stop I immediately knew she would love Taylor Swift. “Fifteen” is a track from Taylor Swift’s Fearless album that was released in 2008 and although I did not listen to the album upon its release it had a major effect on the person I am today. The song’s lyrics talk about her experiences in high school, her first heartbreak, and her first love which are all situations that many teen girls can relate to. Reassurance that you aren’t alone is an element of what makes music so impactful. Elma’s curiosity and optimism reminded me of the feeling I get when I listen to a Taylor Swift song.
Curiosity for Life and Love
Out of all the stories I have read this semester Bus Stop by William Inge left me with the urge of wanting more. The characters in this play are all different from one another whether that be because of the place therefrom, their values, age, or personality though the one thing they share is wanting the layover to be over. Although I enjoyed getting to know all the characters there was one in particular that really stood out to me and that was Elma Duckworth. Since the beginning of Act 1, she had caught my attention and quickly became someone I can relate to because I saw a part of myself in her. Elma is on a journey of finding herself and discovering the world around her. Living in a small town has limited her experiences but has not dimmed her curiosity for life and love. This specific characteristic about her made it a new brainer in choosing Bus Stop and Elma Duckworth to discuss.
Nice to Feel Wanted
A scene that reminds me of “Fifteen” by Taylor Swift is the last scene in Act 3 when Grace another waitress who works at the diner reveals Dr. Lyman’s bad reputation to Elma. Carl had just announced the bus’s departure and the passengers were preparing to get back on the bus. Elma and Dr. Lyman had just said their goodbyes when Carl leans over and tells Grace that his detective friend let him know about Lyman’s bad record of loitering around schools and his involvement with young girls before he got on his bus (Inge 62). This conversation leads to Grace getting spooked and bringing it up to Elma while they are closing up the diner. Reading Elma’s thought process on this realization reminded me of the song because she is recalling past occurrences in a new light while learning things about herself. She had confessed it was nice to feel wanted and attractive after learning the doctor had tried seducing her. This confession alone felt vulnerable and genuine just like the lyrics of “Fifteen”.
I Didn't Know Who I Was Supposed to Be
“I didn't know who I was supposed to be at fifteen” is a line in the song that really stuck out to me. I find that as I grow older this statement still continues to resonate with me. For as long as I can remember I’ve had a difficult time becoming my own person, struggling with possessing my opinions and interests. There are millions of expectations and standards put on people from the minute they are born and the weight of that pressure can result in losing or finding yourself. As of late, I’ve been reflecting on past versions of myself which has made me realize my growth and the reasoning behind my previous actions. Like Elma in the last scene, she is reflecting on past experiences and registering the meaning behind her actions/perspective. Elma Duckworth is a reflection of someone I used to know.
Figuring Things Out
The song “Fifteen” by Taylor Swift is about Taylor’s best friend Abigail. It talks about her personal experiences as a high school freshman, experiencing love and heartbreak for the first time, and the act of reminiscing past memories. Taylor revealed she incorporated things into her song with the intention of creating the piece her younger self wished for (“Fifteen (Song)”). Elma Duckworth’s character in Bus Stop is a local high school student who is a waitress at a small-town diner. The author William Inge depicts her as a bright young girl who is lonely. In the play, Elma catches the attention of Dr. Lyman, leading to the doctor pursuing her throughout the majority of the play. Elma’s innocence leads her to be clueless about his true malicious intentions. But by the end of the play, she finally realizes Lyman was trying to seduce her all along. She had revealed that the doctor’s attraction towards her had unexpectedly flattered her because she had never experienced affection from a man before but that she had also learned a valuable lesson about life and men. The lyrics “When all you wanted was to be wanted, Wish you could go back and tell yourself what you know now” (Taylor 3:02) reminded me of Elma’s realization and my interpretation of her afterthoughts.. It seems as though Elma is still figuring out herself and the world around her. Just like any teen life seems overwhelming and impossible to figure out but Elma has proven to rise up from an issue and come out of it more knowledgeable. Just like this song and Taylor, she is reminiscing about an experience that made her a more mature person.
The Spark I Was Looking For
This writing and reading experience allowed me to learn the complexities of Elma Duckworth and gave me the opportunity to empathize with a character. I find that connecting with a fictional character can enable the brain to think/look at something in a new light. Through this process, I gained personal knowledge and utilized the critical thinking skills I learned this semester. Reading became a big hobby of mine late last year; however when I began college my time had been overtaken by assignments which resulted in my motivation to burn out. Although this paper became the spark I had been looking for. My passion for stories has returned and I am now more excited than ever to get back to books!
